Start with the job, not the spec sheet

There is no single best two-way radio — only the best one for what you're doing. In Australia the everyday choice is UHF CB: 80 channels in the 476–477 MHz band, a maximum of 5 watts, and no individual licence or fee because approved gear runs under an ACMA class licence. That covers convoys, farms, worksites, camping and keeping a group together off the grid. (A boat is the exception — that's marine VHF, with its own rules, and we cover it below.) Because almost every UHF CB radio shares the same channels and the same 5 W ceiling, the thing that really separates them is the type of radio and a handful of features. Get the type right and the rest is easy.

The single biggest reason two-way radios beat phones outdoors is that they don't need a tower. They talk radio-to-radio, so they keep working in the places where your mobile shows no bars — which is exactly where most people actually want them. Sort out the use case first, and the five steps below will land you on the right radio.

Step 1–2: match the use, then pick the type

Be honest about how you'll actually use the radio, because that decides the type. If you're mostly on foot — hiking, on a site, walking a property, ducking between vehicles — a handheld is the obvious pick. It's self-contained, you can hand one to a mate, and a good 5 W unit does plenty. If the radio lives in a 4WD or work truck and you want the best possible range, a vehicle-mount wins. The trade-off is real and worth understanding.

A handheld's antenna is short and sits low — usually near the ground when you're standing in a gully or behind your vehicle. A vehicle-mount runs the same 5 W but feeds a tall antenna on the roof or bullbar, often a metre or more up and in the clear. Antenna height and a clean path do more for range than any electronics inside the radio, so a mount with a decent antenna will comfortably out-talk a handheld even though both put out 5 W. The catch: a mount needs installing, an antenna and a power feed, and it stays with the vehicle. Many tourers run both — a mount for distance on the highway and convoy, plus a handheld to carry when they leave the car. If you can only buy one and the radio mostly travels in a vehicle, mount it.

Step 3: why 5 W isn't the whole story

It's tempting to shop on watts, but in UHF CB you can't — every legal radio tops out at 5 W anyway, and plenty of handhelds (and all the toy-grade units) put out less. More importantly, UHF is line-of-sight. The signal travels in roughly straight lines, so what's between you and the other radio matters more than the last half-watt of power. In open, flat country you might reach 10–25 km; through hills, bush or built-up suburbs that can drop to 1–5 km. A hilltop helps everyone; a valley wall stops everyone.

That's why the order of importance goes: a good, well-mounted antenna first, clear terrain and height second, then watts. A 5 W handheld with its stubby antenna down in a creek bed will be out-performed by the same 5 W feeding a roof antenna up on the ridge. When two stations still can't see each other, a repeater (on the duplex channels, typically Ch 1–8 and 41–48) can relay the signal from a high site and dramatically extend reach. Step 4: IP67 and battery, explained

If the radio is going outdoors, on a worksite, on a quad bike or anywhere near dust and water, the IP rating matters. IP67 is the one to look for on a rugged handheld: the first digit (6) means dust-tight, and the second (7) means it survives brief immersion in water — roughly up to a metre for about 30 minutes. In plain terms, an IP67 radio shrugs off a dusty track, a downpour and a quick drop in a puddle. (Marine sets often quote IPX7 instead — the X just means dust wasn't separately tested, while the 7 still means it handles submersion, which is what counts on the water.) A cheap radio with no IP rating is fine around camp on a fine day, but don't count on it surviving the wet.

Battery is the other practical call on a handheld. Look at the real-world runtime, whether it uses a removable pack (handy to carry a spare on a long trip) or a sealed internal battery, and how it charges — a USB-C charge in the car is far more convenient on the road than a proprietary cradle. Vehicle-mounts sidestep this entirely by running off the car, which is another quiet point in their favour for long trips.

Step 5: features worth paying for

Once type, antenna and rating are sorted, features are where you spend the rest of your money — so pay only for the ones you'll use:

  • Scan — sweeps the channels and stops on activity, so you hear the convoy or the truckies on Ch 40 without manually flicking through 80 channels. Genuinely useful for travelling.
  • Instant Channel 5/35 — a dedicated button that jumps straight to the emergency channel and its repeater input. Worth having for peace of mind; you keep these channels clear otherwise.
  • Bluetooth and app control — pair a wireless earpiece or PTT, and use a phone app to set channels, scan lists and (on some models) share location. Lovely on a convoy or a remote crew; pointless if you'll never open the app.
  • Smart-key / channel shortcuts — one-touch jumps to your common channels (highway, convoy, 4WD). Saves fiddling with cold or gloved hands.
  • Twin packs — farms, events and work crews rarely need one radio, they need several. A twin or multi-pack of capable handhelds is usually far better value than a single premium unit.
  • Compander / clear audio — better receive audio that cuts through engine and machinery noise is worth more day to day than a spec you'll never notice.

Features that look impressive but rarely change the experience: huge channel "memory" counts beyond the standard 80, gimmicky displays, and anything described as boosting range beyond the legal 5 W (it can't — and non-approved gear isn't legal for UHF CB here anyway).

Antennas and accessories

If you take one thing from this guide: the antenna does the heavy lifting. On a vehicle-mount, a quality antenna mounted high and in the clear is the cheapest, biggest range upgrade you can make — far more effective than chasing a "stronger" radio. Antennas come in different gain ratings: a higher-gain antenna squashes the signal flatter to reach further across open country, while a lower-gain antenna throws more signal upward and works better in hilly terrain. Pick to suit where you drive, and many tourers carry one of each.

On a handheld, you can often swap the stubby for a longer aftermarket antenna for a useful range bump, or fit a remote speaker-mic so you can talk without raising the whole radio to your face. A spare battery, a USB-C charge lead and a decent earpiece round out the kit for most people. Spend here before you spend on a fancier radio body.

Rule of thumb. Spend on the antenna and where you mount it before you spend on the radio. A modest radio with a great, well-placed antenna beats a premium radio with a poor one, every time.
