The box says "up to 20 km". Your handheld struggles to reach the next ridge. Both can be true. Here's what actually governs UHF CB range — and why a good antenna beats more watts every time.
The single most important thing to understand about UHF radio is that it's line-of-sight. The signal travels in essentially straight lines, like light. If your antenna and the other antenna can "see" each other over the terrain, you'll talk. Put a hill, a building or the curve of the earth between you, and the signal is blocked or badly weakened.
This is why range claims are so slippery. On a flat, open plain or across water, two UHF sets can reach a long way. Drop them into a hilly suburb or thick bush and the same radios might only manage a kilometre or two. Same radios, same power — wildly different range, purely because of what's in the way.
It also explains why height helps so much. Raising an antenna lets it see further before the terrain or the horizon cuts in. A radio on a hilltop reaches dramatically further than the same radio in a gully.
People obsess over watts. In reality, for UHF CB — where everyone is capped at 5 W anyway — power is the least important of the big factors. Here's the order that matters:
The antenna does more for your range than anything else you can change. A good, well-mounted antenna — the right type, at a decent height, with a clear ground plane — can transform a radio's reach. A taller antenna with higher "gain" focuses your signal out toward the horizon instead of up into the sky, which is exactly where you want it for distance. A cheap, short or poorly mounted antenna will hobble even the best radio.
After the antenna, the land does the rest. Hills, buildings, dense forest and the earth's curvature all block UHF. Getting either antenna higher — a roof mount instead of a handheld, a hilltop instead of a valley — buys you more line-of-sight, and therefore more range, than any amount of extra power.
More power helps a signal punch through noise and marginal conditions a little, but it does not let UHF bend over a hill. A 5 W radio with a great antenna on a high mount will comprehensively out-reach a 5 W radio with a stubby antenna down low. Since legal UHF CB tops out at 5 W, watts is rarely the thing holding you back — the antenna and the terrain are.

When line-of-sight runs out, a repeater is the answer. A repeater is a radio sitting somewhere high — a hill, a tower, a tall building — that listens on one channel and instantly re-broadcasts on another. Because it's up high with a great antenna, it can "see" a huge area, so two radios that can't reach each other directly can both reach the repeater and talk through it.
This is how UHF CB users cover distances that direct (simplex) contact never could. To use one, you select a repeater output channel and switch on duplex/repeater mode. If you're not getting the reach you want, work through these in order — they're roughly ranked by how much difference they make.
The biggest, cheapest win. Fit a quality external antenna of the right type and height, properly mounted — it beats any radio swap.
Mount the antenna as high and clear as you can. On a vehicle, a roof or bull-bar mount with a clear ground plane outperforms a low one.
Move to high, open ground to transmit. A few steps onto a ridge or rise can open a path that a gully completely blocks.
When direct contact won't make it, switch to a local repeater channel in duplex mode to relay your signal far beyond line-of-sight.
Don't chase watts. Aftermarket amplifiers that push past 5 W aren't legal on UHF CB and won't fix a line-of-sight problem anyway — UHF can't bend over a hill no matter how much power you throw at it. Spend the money and effort on the antenna and its mounting instead. That's where real range comes from.
